Why Student Life in Norwich is The Best

24/04/2019

We think Norwich is the best student city in the UK; students love it so much that they usually end up staying!

Going to university is exciting and scary at the same time, but a freshers life in Norwich is a good one, trust us, you’re going to have fun!

Checking out the nightlife is a priority. It’s not London or Manchester but there’s always plenty going on, and if you do crave a bigger city every once in a while then you can just pop on a train.
Norwich is large enough to host some significant events, such as concerts, festivals, Sundown and Pride, but the city has many smaller events as well like Streetfest, City of ale and Fakefest.

We’ve asked a couple of UEA students what their top places are and they recommend:

Karma Kafe If you like RnB, bassline, house, grime then Karma Cafe with its three floors is the place for you, it’s like three clubs in one. Students night is Thursday, and they have deals on drinks for UEA and NUA students.

Mantra holds After Dark which is Norwich’s busiest student night held on a Thursday.
Downstairs you’ll find the latest club fillers, then pop upstairs for some urban, afro beats, dancehall, Trap and Grime.

Gonzo’s is the place for great music and even better food; every weekday between 3 pm and 6 pm chicken wings are just 25p each! This place has the best burgers and if you don’t want to crawl around the city you can just stay put for cocktail time, then the nightclub gets going and when it gets too much there’s a chill-out zone; did we mention the rooftop garden?

At Bermuda Bobs you’ll find 170 types of rum, so more like a rum shack than a bar! This shack pulls in some of the biggest promoters in the UK, and their events sell out in hours. With its powerful sound system, Norwich’s best artists, impressive party goers this place hits the spot for students.

The UEA LCR (Lower Common Room) is the place to be on a Saturday night, situated on the campus and run by the union of UEA students. Over the years the LCR has attracted big bands like Kasabian, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Coldplay, U2, Manic Street Preachers and it continues to pull the best.

The Waterfront, also run by the union of UEA students and in the past has been a regional winner of the NME’s Best Small Venue Award! If you thought the list of bands at the LCR was impressive, then you’ll be amazed to know that the likes of Amy Winehouse, Arctic Monkeys, Elbow, Faithless, Nirvana, The Prodigy, Stereophonics and more have graced this venue.

There’s also a rumour that Norwich has a pub for every day of the year, rather handy! This city has the highest number of pubs per square mile in the whole of the UK.

Our students recommend:

The Playhouse, its a well-known place for students, the riverside courtyard comes alive at the weekends with pop up food events, live music and BBQ’s. It has a great atmosphere and definitely somewhere to chill. While you’re there check out the What’s on board for the Playhouse, there’s always a great show to see in the lovely riverside theatre.

The Glasshouse is always a good shout for a cheap pint ( if that’s your tipple ) Run by Weatherspoons on Wensum street, and next door to one of the oldest hotels in the UK, The Maids Head Hotel.

Other Weatherspoon pubs in Norwich are:
The Bell Hotel, The Whiffler and for a riverside view The Queen of Iceni is a great choice.

So many pubs to choose from but our students recommend the above because they're easy on the student budget, other pubs can be more expensive.

We asked our students about good food places next.

If you like Pizza then Donelli’s got the vote, great pizzas, great service and they do a lunchtime deal of 1 pizza and a drink for just £6.00!

Grosvenor fish and chip grotto is famous in Norwich, it’s even been on the One Show! If you fancy a cheeky cod, a chicky chicky bang bang or a Waco taco, then you’re in for a treat. Take away or sit down, but if you fancy a pint then pop over to the Birdcage ( another pub ), order your beer and the food gets delivered by hand to your table. It’s a perfect partnership between the businesses so you can enjoy your food and a drink at the same time.

If you fancy a more worldly cuisine with a street food feel then head over to Norwich market. In Britains best outdoor market you can get a great sausage roll from The Feed, a plate of lasagne from Lasagneria, a Japenese steamed bun with a rice bowl from Bun Box, everything Spanish from Churros and Chorizo and one of our favourites is Cocina Mia, Chilean specials that change daily.

After all of that eating, drinking and partying you might want to do a spot of shopping ( if you have any money left) Norwich is voted as one of the top 10 cities in the UK for shopping. Two big shopping malls, with plenty of high street, branded shops but if you’re after something unique head for Norwich Lanes. In the lanes, you’ll find over 300 independent retailers to choose from, and if vintage is your thing, then you’ll find it here.

That’s just a little bit about why student life in Norwich is the best, but there’s so much more, on warm days there are so many green spaces for picnics and chilling, there’s also the many beaches to visit and the endless outdoor activities it has to offer.
