with a history that stretches back to 1020.
The name itself is thought to mean "folk who live on the high ground between the rivers"; and today the small village contains an array of waterside properties, pubs, shops and restaurants. Horning is also home to some iconic buildings including the beautiful Horning Church and the Swan Inn which dates back to 1695. Today, the Inn is seen as an important landmark in the village which has appeared in several films and books. The Church of St Benedict goes back even further to 1220 which belonged to St Benet's Abbey, founded by King Cnut in AD 1020. The abbey ruins can still be seen just outside of Horning.
There's also the Ferry Inn which was built during the 1840s and is supposedly haunted by the ghost of a young girl who visits every twenty years. Unfortunately, the Ferry Inn had to be rebuilt after the Second World War as it was severely damaged by a German bomb that killed 22 people.
In 1941 on 26 April 15 bombs were believed to have been dropped on Horning, most of the bombs landed on the marshes but one bomb landed on the Ferry Inn causing the fatalities. That didn't stop the people of Horning though, their resilience shined through and the Inn reopened three weeks later with a makeshift bar in place for the locals to congregate.
Horning has so much history but it also makes for a great place to live.
Lower Street, Horning is lined with some gorgeous old houses and it is here where you'll find you are right amongst village life.
The community in Horning is a thriving one where the locals bump into one another at one of the cafe's, at the post office or one of the other many shops.
Horning offers many waterside properties, also homes within the heart of its picturesque village surrounded by beautiful views. The now modern Ferry Inn has proved to be very popular with both locals and visitors due to its Sunday roast dinner and its family-friendly atmosphere. There are also many events throughout the year including fetes and races upon the river. The village of Horning is situated in an ideal location, it's close to the most beautiful areas of the Norfolk broads, the Norfolk countryside is all around, and it's not far from beautiful beaches as well as the city of Norwich.
